Booking a photoshoot is such a beautiful way to capture your story. Whether it’s welcoming a new baby, celebrating your engagement, or simply documenting this season of life with your family. But knowing how to prepare can make a world of difference.

With a little preparation you can feel confident, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the experience.

As a photographer, I’ve learned that a few simple steps before your session can turn an ordinary shoot into something effortless, relaxed, and full of emotion. Here’s my go-to guide on how to prepare for your photoshoot so you can make the most of your time in front of the camera.

1. Timing Is Everything

When it comes to photography, lighting makes all the difference. The best time to shoot is usually in the afternoon or early morning. That soft, warm light just after sunrise or before sunset. It gives your photos that dreamy, romantic glow.

If you’re planning a family shoot with young children, we can adjust timing to suit their routines. We can plan around nap and mealtimes, so everyone is comfortable and happy. The goal is to find the balance between great light and happy faces!

2. Choose the Right Outfits

Your outfits play a big role in how your photos look and feel. Choose clothing that reflects your personality but also photographs beautifully.

Here are a few outfit tips:

• Coordinate rather than match exactly. Think “same vibe, different outfits.”

• Stick with neutral or earthy tones — they photograph well in natural light and feel timeless. Avoid bold logos or bright neon colours that can distract from your connection.

•Textures like linen, cotton, or knit add depth and movement. Choosing flowing fabrics allows for natural movement as well.

• Most importantly, wear something you feel confident and comfortable in.

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help with outfit suggestions or share my client styling guide for inspiration.

3. Location, Location, Location

Your location helps tell your story. Do you love the beach at sunset, a wide-open field, or something more personal like your family home?

Think about the overall look you want – beach, home, bush, gardens or a bit of everything. I have a location guide I can send with all of my fav locations with images so you can see exactly what your overall image will look like.

4. Keep an Eye on the Weather

Weather can play a big part in the look and feel of your session. While we all love golden sunsets, cloudy or moody skies can be just as magical - they create soft light and add character to your images.

Of course, if the weather takes a turn for the worse (think heavy rain or strong winds), we’ll simply reschedule. Your comfort always comes first.

5. Don’t Stress About Perfection – Mindset is Everything

Feeling at ease with your photographer makes all the difference. I always spend a bit of time chatting and getting to know you before we start shooting.

The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and having fun - not when everything is perfectly posed. Don’t worry if your hair moves, the kids giggle, or your partner makes you laugh mid shot - those are the moments that make your images real and full of life.

My approach is relaxed and natural, so be ready to have fun and let things unfold. Come with an open mind and a willingness to play, move, and connect. I’ll guide you through everything, so you never feel awkward in front of the camera.

If you have a particular vision, pose, or inspiration in mind, feel free to share it before your session. Communication helps me tailor the experience to you.

6. Prepare the Little Details

Before your session, take a moment to plan the small things that can make a big difference.

• Make sure clothes are clean, ironed, and ready to go.

• Empty pockets (phones, keys, etc.) so they don’t show up in photos.

• Touch up nails and hair if you’d like to feel a little extra polished.

• Bring any essentials — water, wipes, snacks for little ones, or a spare outfit just in case.

It’s the simple prep that helps everything run smoothly on the day!

Once the planning is done, let yourself enjoy it. You’ve chosen a photographer you trust - now it’s time to let go and be present in the moment. I’ll take care of the lighting, angles, and direction so you can focus on what matters most - being together.

Your photoshoot is more than just a session - it’s a memory you’ll look back on for years to come. But preparing for your photoshoot doesn’t need to be stressful - it’s simply about creating space to feel comfortable and confident. The more relaxed you are, the more authentic and beautiful your photos will be.
